Execution place of Mary, Queen of Scots
Richard of York who came the Duke of York inherited the Castle in 1415, and it became a beloved residence of his family, and the birthplace of Richard III of England in 1452. Fotheringhay also became the site of a treaty between Scottish prince Alexander Stewart, Duke of Albany and Edward IV of England to take the Scottish throne from his brother in 1469.
Most famously, Mary Queen of Scots spent her final days at the Castle, where she was beheaded in the castle in 1587.
