He married firstly, in June 1555, to Eupham MacConnell whom he divorced on 29 July 1573 on the grounds of her having “gaif her body in filthy adulterie to Donald Campbell of Zitherauchan”. They had several children - it is likely that - Duncan Stewart -6th of Appin was their child.
He married again after the divorce to Katherine, daughter of John Campbell, 1st of Lochnell, on 6 April 1575. She
was widow of John MacLean of Kinlochaline.
Duncan Stewart is sometimes thought to be a child of this marriage however the dates of his birth and John´s second marriage don´t quite work.
He married thirdly, a daughter of John MacDonald of Moidart, by whom he had
further issue :
2. John Stewart, 1st of Ardsheal, is styled brother to the Laird of Appin in a letter by Campbell of Glenorchy to his kinsman, the Earl of Argyll, dated 27 April 1618, in which he comments on John’s recent killing of John Abrach of
Glentoun. He had issue,
3. A daughter, m. Alan Cameron of Lochiel.
