ROBERT II Stewart
King of Scotland
KING ROBERT II. was born 1316; declared heir to the throne of Scotland 1318, created Earl of Atholl (S.)1342, and Earl of Strathearn (S.)1358, succeeded to throne in 1371 on the death of his uncle, King David II. (Bruce).
He died 1390.
The king married, first, Elizabeth Mure, daughter of Sir Adam Mure of Rowallan, and by her had,
(1) John, who succeeded as King Robert III. ROBERT III, King of Scotland.
(2) Walter, who married Isabella Countess of Fife and died without issue about 1362.
Arms: on the Seal of the Countess of Fife, 1369.-Two Shields. Dexter, A lion rampant (Fife); Sinister, A fess chequy (Stewart)
(3) Robert, Duke of Albany. (See ROBERT, Duke of Albany ).
(4) Alexander, Earl of Buchan. (See ALEXANDER, Earl of Buchan (S.) ).
(5)Marjorie Stewart, m. John Dunbar, brother of George Dunbar, Earl of March,
(Dispensation dated 11 July 1371). They had issue.
(6)Elizabeth Stewart, m. by 20 November 1373, to Thomas de Haya of Errol,when they had a charter from King Robert II. for an annual rent to be uplifted from the Merchants of Stirling. They had issue.
(7)Jean Stewart, m. firstly, to Sir John Keith, and had issue ; and secondly, Sir John Lyon, by whom she had further issue. She m. thirdly in 1384, to Sir James Sandilands of Calder, and had issue.
(8)Margaret Stewart, m. John, Lord of the Isles, (Papal Dispensation dated at Avingon, on 18 July 1350) and to whom Robert II. granted a charter for the Isle of Colonsay, the lands of Lochaber and the middle-part of Knapdale on 6June 1377. They had issue.
The king married, secondly, Euphemia, daughter of Hugh, Earl of Ross, and widow of John Ranulf, third Earl of Moray, and by her had :-
(9) David, Earl of Strathearn. (See DAVID , Earl of Strathearn, Caithness).
(10) Walter, Earl of Atholl. (See WALTER, Earl of Atholl).
(11) Isabella Stewart, m. firstly, to James Douglas, 2nd Earl of Douglas, (Papal Dispensation dated at Avingon, on 24 September 1371. He was killed at the battle of Otterburn in 1388), and had no apparent issue. She m. secondly,
after 1388 and before 1 April 1390, to Sir John Edmonstone of that Ilk,
(12)Egidia Stewart, m. in 1387, to William Douglas, Lord of Nithsdale, illegitimate son of Archibald, 3rd Earl of Douglas.
(13). Elizabeth Stewart, m. in around 1380, to Sir David Lindsay, 1st Earl of Crawford, and had issue.
(14). A daughter, m. Sir Robert Logan of Restalrig.
King Robert II with Mariote, daughter of John de Cardney of that Ilk, and sister to Sir Robert de
Cardney, Bishop of Dunkeld, he also fathered a number of natural children;
(15) Sir John Stewart, Heritable Sheriff of Bute, ancestor of the Marquis of Bute and others. He m. Janet,
daughter of Sir John Semple of Elliotston.
(16) Thomas Stewart, Archdeacon of St. Andrews and Dean of Dunkeld and had died by 6 April 1431.

(17) Alexander Stewart, Canon of Glasgow.
(18) Sir John Stewart of Dundonald, called "The Red_Stewart," Lord of Burley, killed at Dumbarton 1425. He was married by 1416, to Elizabeth, daughter of Sir William Graham of Kincardine.
(19) Alexander Stewart of Inverlunan, ancestor of the Stewarts of Doually.
(20) James Stewart of Kinfauns.
(21) Sir John Stewart of Cardney or Cairny.
(22) Walter Stewart.
Arms:
(1) of King Robert II. on Seal when Earl of Strathearn, 1369.-A frss chequy (Laing). On Seal, 1370.-A fiss chequy, with lion´s head erased issuing in chief CREST: A talbot´s head, collared. SUPPORTERS: Two l´ons rampant (Macdonald).
(2) As King-The Arms of Scotland, Gold, a lion rampant red, armed and tongued blue, within a double tressure flory-counter-flory red. CREST: A lion statant guardant
Note.-On all the armorial seals of the Scottish kings, from the earliest to that of Queen Mary, the end of the lion´s tail on the shield is turned inwards towards the back of the animal´s head. From Queen Mary´s second seal the tail is turned outwards or away ftom the head.
