ROBERT III Stewart
King of Scotland
KING ROBERT III., the eldest son, succeeded to the throne. His baptismal name was John, but, in deference to the wish of the people, he adopted the name Robert. He was born about 1337, and was created Earl of Carrick in 1368.
He died 1406.
About 1367 he married Annabella, daughter of Sir John Drummond of Stobhall.
They had
(1) David, DUKE OF ROTHESAY (S.), created Duke in 1398, born 1378, created Earl of Carrick (S.) 1390 and Earl of Atholl (S.) 1398. He married in 1400 Marjory, daughter of Archibald, third Earl of Douglass, (she m. secondly in
1403, to Walter Haliburton and d. in around 1420 with no issue) and died without issue in 1402. He was probably starved to death by his uncle, Robert, Duke of Albany.
Arms: on Seal of Duke of Rothesay, 1399.-Scotland, with label of three points (Macdonald). Lindsay shows the label blue.
(2) Robert, died in infancy.
(3) James, who succeeded to the Crown JAMES I, King of Scotland.
(4)Margaret Stewart, m. Archibald, 4th Earl of Douglas and 1st Duke of Touraine, (Dispensation dated October 1371.4 He was one of the Scots commanders in the army of Joan de Arc and was killed at the battle of Verneull, in France, in
August of 1424), and d. in around 1450. She was buried in the Abbey of Lincluden, and had issue.
(5)Mary Stewart, m. firstly, to George Douglas,and secondly, to Sir James Kennedy of Dunure.Surviving him, she m. or at least was contracted to marry William Cunningham of Kilmaurs, (Dispensation dated 7 July 1409), and had m. again by 15 May 1416, to Sir William Graham of Kincardine, (he was widow of a daughter of Sir John Oliphant of Aberdalgie). Also surviving that husband, she m. again, to William Edmonstone, 1st of Duntreath, and had issue to all.
(6). Elizabeth Stewart, m. Sir James Douglas of Dalkeith, (he survived her and m.
secondly, to Janet, daughter of Sir William Borthwick of that Ilk), and d. in 1420, having had issue.
(7). Egedia Stewart
King Robert III. had also two illegitimate sons
(d) James Stewart of Kilbride, said to be ancestor of the Stewarts of Shawtoun.
(e) Sir John Stewart of Ardgowan, ancestor of the Shaw-Stewarts (See JOHN STEWART, Sir John of Ardgowan ).

On Seal 1383, when Earl of Carrick-The Arms of Scotland, with label of three points . Nisbet says the label was red. CREST as before. As King he used the Arms of Scotland, and possibly two unicorns as Supporters
