ROBERT Stewart
Earl of Orkney
ROBERT STEWART, illegitimate son of JAMES V, King of Scotland, and Euphemia, daughter of Alexander, first Lord Elphinstone. He was Abbot, and in 1559, after being confirmed into the Protestant faith Commendator, of Holyrood House. In 1581 he was created EARL OF ORKNEY and Lord Zetland. He married Jane Kennedy , dau of Gilbert, third Earl of Cassillis who died on 4 February 1593.
He had three sons
(1) Henry, Master of Orkney, mentioned in the entail of the earldom 9 June 1585.´ He predeceased his father before 1590, when his brother Patrick is styled Master of Orkney
(2) Patrick, second Earl of Orkney. He was beheaded 1614, and his honours and estates forfeited. He died without legitimate issue.
Arms: of Patrick, Earl of Orkney, on Seal, 1592.-I and 4. Scotland. 2 and 3. A dragon boat, sail furled, flag flying. CREST: An inverted anchor. MOTTO: "Sic_fuit_est_et_erit." SUPPORTERS: A unicorn chained and a griffin (Macdonald). Nisbet says he had a ribbon dezter on the I and 4 quarters, and gives the CREST as: A King enthroned, in his right hand a sword and in his left a falcon. SUPPORTERS and MOTTO as above.
(3) John, created Lord Kincleven in 1607, and EARL OF CARRICK (in Orkney) in 1628. He
m. on 26 October 1604, to Elizabeth, daughter of Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Nottingham, (she was widow of Sir Robert Southwell), and d. in around 1648.He died without male heirs in 1652.
3a) Margaret Stewart, m. Sir John Mennes and had children.
Arms: of Earl of Carrick.-1 and 4. Scotland, within bordure compony, blue and silver. 2 and 3. Orkney. CREST, MOTTO and SUPPORTERS as given by Nisbet for No. 25 b (Pont´s MS.). Robert, Earl of Orkney, had also several illegitimate children of whom-
(4). Sir James Stewart of Eday.
(5). Sir Robert Stewart of Middleton, was a substitute heir to his brother Patrick in the Earldom of Orkney and Shetland on 1 March 1600. He has a more comprehensive biography in the famous Stewarts section.
( 6). George Stewart of Brugh, was an illegitimate son by Marjorie Sandilands, wife of John Gordon of Avochie, and was a substitute heir to his father in various lands in the Earldom of Orkney and Shetland on 30 September 1568. He had letters of legitimation on 29 November 1569.
(7)Edward Stewart of Brugh, was an illegitimate son by Marjorie Sandilands and succeeded his brother George in his
lands of Brugh on 30 March 1616.
(8). James Stewart of Graemesay, .He had children.
(9)William Stewart of Egilshay, who was summoned in 1600 to stand trial for the murder of his first wife named Bellenden and was afterwards a Colonel in Swedish Service in 1609.
(10) Robert Stewart, was a second illegitimate son by this name.
(11)David Stewart of How, an illegitimate son who acquired the lands of How.
(12)Jean Stewart, m. firstly, to Patrick Leslie, 1st Lord Lindores, she m. secondly, to Sir Robert, 1st Lord Melville, (he was the widower of Catherine, daughter of William Adamson, of Craigcrook, by whom he had children ; and of Mary,
daughter of Andrew Leslie, 5th Earl of Rothes, who had d. in April of 1605).
(13) Mary Stewart, m. Patrick, 6th Lord Gray, (c/m 25 November 1585.He was the widower of Elizabeth, daughter John, Lord Lyon of Glamis), and had children.
(14) Grisel Stewart, was an illegitimate daughter and m. by 21 April 1591, to Hugh Sinclair of Burgh
(15) Christian Stewart, m. John Mowat of Hugoland, and had 5 children and whose widow she was in 1634
(16.)Mary Stewart, said to have m. Lawrence Sinclair of Goat.
Arms: of Stewart of Bigtoun, Zetland, descended from a younger son of Grahamsay, recorded 1672-77 - Gold, a fess chequy blue and silver between two blue mascles. CREST: A green holly leaf slpped MOTTO: "Sic_virescit_ industria" (Lyon Register).
Arms: of Stewart of Newark, recorded 1672-77.-Gold, a fess chequy blue and silver within a red bordure charged with three lions rampant, and as many ships at anchor interchanged gold. CREST: A lion´s paw and a palm branch crossed saltire-ways proper. MOTTO: "Christus_inihi_lucrum" (Lyon Register).
Arms: of Robert, Earl of Orkney, on Seal, Is -Scotland, with crozier behind shield (Laing). On Seal, 1572.-Scotland, debruised by a ribbon (Macdonald). As Earl he bore-i and 4. Scotland, debruised by black ribbon sinister. 2 and 3. Blue, a gold shzp with sails furled (Orkney) (Nisbet). [CREST: A king enthroned, holding in r´ght hand a sword and in left a falcon, all proper. MOTTO: "Sic_fuit_est_et_erit."
