Patrick Stewart had a charter under the Great Seal for the Earldom of Orkney and Shetland on 1 March 1600 and was served heir to his elder brother Henry Stewart, Master of Orkney, on 2 October 1606. He was found guilty of High Treason for which he was beheaded at Edinburgh, on 6 February 1615. He m. Margaret, daughter of William, 6th Lord Livingston, (she was widow of Sir Lewis Bellenden of Auchinoull), and was father of,
1. Robert Stewart, was an illegitimate son by Marjorie Sinclair. On his father’s arrest he seized Kirkwall castle which was laid siege to by government forces. He surrendered to the Earl of Caithness and was hanged in Edinburgh, on 6 January 1615.
2. Mary Stewart, an illegitimate daughter. 3. Katherine Stewart, m. John Sinclair of Ulbster, and had issue.
