The Gordons were staunch Jacobites and joined both the 1715 rising and the 1745 consequently forfeiting their lands.
Glenbucket belonged in succession to two branches of the Gordon family. The builder was John Gordon of Cairnburrow who built the castle after his marriage to Helen Carnegie in 1590. Like other Gordons he was accused of being involved in the murder of Bonnie Earl of Moray (which you can read more about elsewhere). At the start of the 18th century John Gordon of Knockespock bought the castle for his son. Gordon was a devoted Jacobite. He sold the estate in 1738 just before the Rising.
The castle is closed until Spring 2017
